How Much Water Storage Does an Off-Grid Property Actually Need?
Most water storage advice gives a single number and stops there, which is not very useful — the right amount depends on how many people, what the water is for, and how long a realistic outage actually runs in your area.
The baseline per-person number
A commonly used minimum is one gallon per person per day for drinking and basic hygiene — that is a survival minimum, not a comfortable one. A more realistic day-to-day figure for an off-grid household, including cooking and basic cleaning, runs closer to 5–10 gallons per person per day once you are not rationing.
Deciding how many days to store for
A common target is a two-week reserve, which for a family of four at the more realistic 5–10 gallon figure works out to roughly 300–600 gallons. That number is a starting point for backup storage, not a replacement for a working well, spring, or rainwater catchment system as the primary source.
Why several smaller tanks beat one large one
A single large tank is a single point of failure — a leak, a freeze crack, or contamination takes out the entire reserve at once. Splitting the same total volume across two or three smaller tanks, ideally in different locations, means one failure only costs part of the reserve, not all of it.
What changes the math
- Livestock and gardens add substantially more demand than the household figures above cover.
- Climate matters — a hot, dry region pushes both human and garden water needs well above these baseline numbers.
- A working backup source (well with a hand pump, nearby spring) reduces how much stored volume you actually need, versus relying on storage alone.
